Using Resting Heart Rate to Determine Heart Rate Zones
Next to having your Max Heart Rate (MHR) tested professionally, using our Resting Heart Rate (RHR) is a better way to determine your heart rate zones. For example, below are my own results from the age predictor, RHR predictor, and porfessional testing.
Age Predictor - 85% = 159
RHR Predictor - 85% = 169
Test - 85% = 172
BIG DIFFERENCE!
To determine your RHR, each morning upon waking count your heart rate for 30 secs and multiply by 2. Take the average of three days. Then use this formula to determine your ranges.
228-age-RHR = Z
Z x .65 = Y
Y + RHR = 65% of your Max HR
Simply sub .65 for .75 or .85 to find the various HR Ranges and then plug that into your heart rate monitor. This gives you more accuracy and makes your calorie counters on your heart rate monitors a little more accurate.
