...cuz you’ve been running through my mind all day. That’s the silly line my hubby gave me in Vegas the night I wore a true hussy shirt to the poker table. I’ve uploaded a couple to the Flickr site. The one with me giving the deuce sign is because our slogan is “deuces never looses” made famous by our friend Joe.
So, what the heck does this have to do with anything other than shameless promotion of my new girls? Plenty. I am picking my running up again and will shoot to run the Las Vegas 1/2 Marathon in December. I ran this event last year and it wasn’t the best run ever. It was fun, but the race was a little disorganized and windy. I’m hoping for better weather this year and I just need another excuse to go out there.
With all that said, let’s talk about running since many of us start out as novice runners during our fat loss journey. These are a few things I learned that make running easier for us current and future Phat Girls.
1. Don’t overtrain. It’s so easy to get caught up in the fact that we aren’t experienced enough in running that we try and run all the time thinking we’ll never finish a race. Find a good schedule and just stick to it. Runnersworld.com and coolrunning.com have good, solid plans you can use.
2. Never sacrifice post run re-fuel thinking you are going to lose more weight that way. You only burn through your muscle stores and not your fat stores. It’s important to follow up your runs with post-run nutrition. A good carb/protein shake like Myoplex Lite, or a banana and skim milk will do you fine.
3. Shoes are what will take from being a recreational runner to a life long runner. Don’t skimp on good shoes. Find a reputable, local running store and get properly fitted for you.
4. Wake up two hours before your race and eat and drink. This gives you plenty of time to have a good bathroom experience at home without waiting in long porta-potty lines on race day.
5. Finally, never be ashamed at how slow you run. I hate to hear someone pushing too fast for their fitness level and then burning out. It’s best to work on just running and doing it comfortably the first six months. After that, you can include some speed work, etc. Plus, as you get more experienced and lose fat you will get faster.
Beginning in mid September I am going to start training. As long as my muscle mass doesn’t take a hit I will be running the Vegas 1/2 for the second year in a row. I’m so excited and I hope that some of you might even run. If so, let me know and maybe a bunch of us can meet up for a picture for the site!!!
