I am often asked to help clients through rough times in their life. It always reminds me how much of this is a mental game. So many stumbling blocks come up in life and if you are the type of person who just looks for an excuse to fail at things, well, you will never succeed. It sounds harsh but it is so true. I’ve realized through my fat loss maintenance that it’s all about focusing on ways to succeed versus rolling around in self pity and being too afraid to speak up for what you want.
I talked with my clients today about this issue. At any given time in your “normal” life think about things that YOU allow to derail your efforts:
- Being sick
- Family member being sick
- You work too hard and are tired
- You have kids to take care of
- You have two jobs
- You have a holiday, special occassion coming up
- You have a dinner with friends
- You have your period
- You are going on vacation
- Your family has priorities bigger than you
- You like to spend time with your dog
- Your BF or Mom needs to talk to you
The list goes on and on and on and on…I tell ya, at some point you have to wake up and realize that if you look for excuses to not be healthy well you don’t have to look far. It’s time you start thinking about how you are going to live your fit and healthy lifestyle and let all this other stuff work itself around that. Heck, half this list happens every month!
Do you think it was easy for me to get here? Hell no! Through my journey of fat loss I had a grandmother dying of pancreatic cancer (who raised me and I helped care for in her last months), a 1-3 year old who would not stay at the gym day care, a husband who was promoted to Vice President and worked loads of hours, a lot of holidays, vacations, dinner invitations, friends with problems, periods, etc. I learned that I had to deal with Corinne and her need to be healthy person first. Second, I took care of my business. What I did was NEVER compromise what I wanted. Sure I had to take days off but only if it was after doing all I could to get in my fitness and food.
I challenge all of you this: the next time you want to skip out on your exercise…do it. BUT, you aren’t allowed to watch TV or listen to the radio.
I don’t care if you sit on the couch, just don’t use the excuse of I don’t have time or I’m too tired. If you are too tired to exercise, you need to go to bed. If you don’t have time, then make sure you truly don’t have time and not that you just don’t want allocate the time.
For the food, it’s not that easy. You have to remember the healthy lifestyle you want and keep it in front of you. You have to learn how to put yourself first and not your cravings, your friends wanting you to eat bad things with them, and all the other million and one reasons we find to eat stuff we know we will feel bad about later.
Take care everyone. I love ya all but I want you to love yourself by making decisions that improve your life.
