What’s Wrong With the Word Diet???

The word diet is almost as bad as dropping the “F-Bomb” these days. The lastest terms are lifestyle, nutritional plan, eating strategy…but who are we fooling? Whatever you call it, isn’t it really a diet?

The word diet’s primary definition is “food and drink considered in terms of its qualities, composition, and its effects on health.” What’s wrong with that? This really had me thinking the past few days. I like the word diet but feel ashamed to say it to others or am fearful of defensive comments from people who don’t like the word. As I contemplated the “why” behind diet being villianized these days I realized what separates diet from good and evil. I think of diet as all the things I “choose” to put in my body versus all the things I am “not allowed” to eat.

My diet consists of lean proteins, whole grains, fresh fruits and vegetables, healthy fats, dairy, and water. I eat six times a day and rarely get hungry. My food choices lead me to feel great and power me to go through my day with increased energy levels. I guess my question is why isn’t EVERYONE ON A DIET???

On my diet I also enjoy lattes, cereal, treats, and other things I love. With moderation I feel anything can be enjoyed and savored. But, you know what? The most important lesson my diet has taught me is that I enjoy my new “lifestyle” more than I enjoy cramming down a hamburger or half a pizza. When I use my treats as treats rather than daily occurances I ENJOY them and don’t fret over them for hours and hours knowing I’ll probably eat more junk at the next meal.

In the end, call it what you want but I’m going Old School. Yes, I proudly say I am on a diet…a lifelong diet that will help me be active and healthy for years to come. My diet or lifestyle is defined by what I CHOOSE and not by what I can’t have.
