What the Heck Is This???

Published 23 October 07 04:18 PM | Corinne

So, my mom emails me today with a note she just got at work. Before I show you, let me share a personal story. My mother is having heart problems. She's been overweight, like me, most of her life and it is unfortunately catching up with her. As you know, a big reason for my dramatic lifestyle change was wanting to be around for my son. Now she is faced with wanting to be around for her grandbabies, as she calls them. I have vowed to help her all I can and then one day she can be a before and after at PNP having defeated nasty, ole heart disease. I know she can do it.

This brings me to the email she gets at work. Check this mess out...

LET'S   CELEBRATE!!!

BRING YOU BEST AND GOODEST DISH!!!   LET'S EAT AND EAT UNTIL WE CAN'T EAT NO MORE!!!!!

SIGN UP SHEET BY ME!!!

COME ONE AND ALL!!!   LUNCH AT 11:15AM

Do you know what my mom does for a living? She's a telephonic nurse! She works in the MEDICAL field and this is the attitude they have...a freaking food fest. When I saw this it just screamed to me how crazy our society has become.

  • First, in order to celebrate you have to eat.
  • In order to eat, you have to eat until you can't eat anymore.
  • Sign up and I'm guessing from this message they ain't talking fruit trays and veggie slices.

Maybe I'm just in a raw mood, but when are people going to develop healthy relationships with food? My poor mother is starting on the journey of a lifetime, literally today, and the first road sign is an all you can eat buffet that isn't over until you are puking. Let the good times roll...belly roll, that is.

This just goes to show how hard it is for people to navigate through this fat loss journey. You have to be strong. You have to be willing to be the one to bring the fruit bowl and the veggies. You have to be the one that says I'll be happy to celebrate with you but NOT at the EXPENSE of my goals and my health. Sure people will probably snicker or say things behind her back for "starting another diet" or "making us feel bad by not participating in our luncheon" but you know what? Every time she turns down this festival of trash she'll have one more day with those grandbabies.

Good Lord...I love me a good soap box with an audience! If you are fed up with this kind of constant pressure to eat at work, home, or functions...I want to hear it loud and clear. POST COMMENTS AND TELL THE WORLD THAT YOU ARE BETTER THAN THIS!!!

I agree wholeheartedly!  It's difficult enough to fight the voices inside your head that sometimes want you to make bad choices, but is much worse when you have peer pressure pushing it so hard.  My Mom is oftentimes frustrated by her work colleagues throwing "parties" with nothing but junky choices.  Sometimes it's all you can do to bring what you think you should eat, and it's great if others will eat the good food as well, but if not -- bonus for you!  You get all the good stuff for yourself.

I am jumping up on this soapbox too!!   Seriously, I thought I would be the "bad" mom who sent in healthy foods for my kids' birthdays.  Now the schools have adopted a "healthy food only" policy for birthdays.  It's about time!!

WHOA! That is just plain ridiculous. I am actually quite disgusted w/ society lately also. Everywhere it's easy, FAST FAT FOOD. And food fests like this one. In fact, there is a monster box of donuts in the break room at work right now.

It does not make it easy, that is for sure!

I have always been frustrated by how much our world revolves around food.  Church potlucks, meetings, celebrations, funerals, do we always have to focus on food?  It would be one thing if it were healthy choices, but we all know that the majority of the people aren't thinking celery sticks and carrots for these events!

Preach it sister!

I completely agree with this one. Its like everytime something good happens, lets celebrate and there is massive amounts of food leftover! UGH! I hate it!!

Its like whoa people needs to quit celebrating with food and celebrate LIFE! :)

The other day when we went to friends house, I didnt want to get off track so I said "I can bring a green salad" I guess my salad was really yummy cause everyone said "this is the best salad becca". I was really happy about that! :) :)

I work at the most heavy eating nicely catered company out there - every event and meeting has catering.  This ain't no wheat toast either - this is nice fat sweet danishes, freshly prepared chocolate chip cookies etc in an unlimited amount.  Then, every day it's someone's birthday and there's a cake or something high calorie to eat.  I personally am flying banners all over my work area that I am getting Phit and now, after a couple of months, they dont' even ask me anymore.  When one of the girls kind of made me feel bad, I looked at her with the sweetest face and smile and asked "why do you care what I eat""  I am trying to get in shape, why don't you just support me?  She looked kind of shocked but she doesn't shove cake in my face anymore.  LOL
